Why Can’t I Get High After Eating Edibles Like My Friends?

Edibles are becoming more and more popular each day. One of the reasons is they are available in various formulations. You could get cookies, candies, chocolates, Doritos, and so much more. The only problem that some people might have is not experiencing the high that others experience. Maybe you are with your friends, and you don’t seem to get as high as they do. This might put you off a little bit. The truth is that you are not the only one this is happening to. There are others with the same problem.

Usually, we have seen that the experience from edibles is much better in terms of potency and long-lasting compared to smoking cannabis. But some people describe their experience as the opposite. They claim that edibles do not get them high.

Generally, the effects of the edibles should kick in harder than other methods of consuming cannabis-like smoking. Unfortunately, it is not the case with everyone. We need to understand why that happens with the people? Is it because of the way it processes in the body?

This article will discuss the details about edibles and why some people can’t get high after eating them.

How Marijuana Edibles are Digested and Processed

As we said earlier, the edibles hit harder than smoking cannabis. You could be using a dab rig or any other method. But, everyone’s body is different. Some people might start feeling the effects faster than others. Some might feel fewer effects. It all depends on your body type and metabolism rate.

Normally, the THC gets into the bloodstream through diffusion from the lungs’ alveoli when you inhale the cannabis. However, that’s not how the THC works when you eat edibles. When you eat edibles, the intestines absorb THC after it has been ingested, then the liver processes it. There is something called a first-pass metabolism which is done by the liver. That’s the first step in removing foreign substances from the bloodstream, such as cannabinoids. The blood cannot circulate THC through the body this way.

When you consume edibles, the THC is altered to 11-hydroxy-THC. This is one of the compounds responsible for a long-lasting kick and great psychotropic potential.

The Time It Takes to Process Edibles

Like everything else in life, whenever you are going anywhere, the route of the destination would let you know how long it would take for you to reach there. Similarly, the way you consume cannabis would decide how long it will take for the effects to kick in.

For instance, when you smoke cannabis, you’d feel high within minutes. Why? Because the THC doesn’t take much time to travel through the system. On the other hand, when you consume edibles, the effects would take around 30 minutes up to a few hours to start feeling the effect. Many people think that the edibles are not affecting them, so they consume more than is required. That’s one of the biggest mistakes they could make.

Why Don’t the Edibles Work for Some People?

Some of the reasons why the edibles don’t work for you are:

  • Your body Processes THC too quickly: We discussed the first-pass metabolism above. This is a metabolic process that differs in every individual. So people who have a fast metabolism are lucky because they would feel high earlier than those whose metabolism is slow. Also, people with slow metabolism would observe that the effects would wear off much sooner than people with a high metabolism. This is one of the main reasons why people feel different effects when they consume edibles. It is also possible that people with slow metabolism may not feel the effects at all. So, what should they do? What’s the solution? They can use another technique for the absorption of cannabis which is called sublingual absorption. You’d need to have cannabis oil for this technique. When you use cannabis oil, it would directly enter the bloodstream through your mouth. That means the THC wouldn’t pass through the liver.
  • Eating edibles on an empty stomach: There are a few different opinions regarding eating edibles on an empty stomach. But, none of them says that you would not get high when you do that. The effects would set in pretty quickly because the THC wouldn’t have anything else to compete with. It would provide something called a psychotropic kick. However, the composition of the THC is such that it is always recommended to have it with fatty foods. It will help to have the best effects of the THC with a stronger and long-lasting high if you eat fatty foods along with the Edibles. On the other hand, if you consume the edible when you haven’t consumed anything, you might feel panicked or paranoid. That’s why make sure that you always eat something before you eat edibles.
  • Not waiting long enough: To feel the full effects, you might have to wait for 30 minutes to two hours, depending on your metabolism rate. It is different from person to person, so you shouldn’t stress when you don’t feel the effects right after 30 minutes. When people don’t feel the effect within 30-50 minutes, they get impatient and consume more than recommended. Please don’t make this mistake. The effects would kick in extremely hard if you do that. It’s all about understanding your body.

Conclusion

The rate of digestion and metabolism is different for everyone. That’s why some people get high quickly, and others take a lot of time. If you don’t think edibles are working for you, there are other ways to try cannabis and get the most out of it.
